![]() It does not take long to find more unique gameplay systems at work in Nioh 2. Nioh 2's stages are filled with hidden alcoves, shortcuts, and plenty of loot to find, though there is nothing particularly outstanding about them they would be right at home in the first game. These same maps are reused for sub-missions, with remixed enemies, altered paths, alternate weather, and varied lighting to keep the run distinct. Nioh 2, much like the original, is mission-based, and transports you to expansive themed areas filled with monsters, bandits, traps, and treasures that culminate in a boss fight at the end. ![]() Once you finish the tutorial, the game dumps you into a menu screen to select a level. I look forward to seeing how gear and abilities enhance the performance and capabilities of the demon mode in the full game. Not only are these super moves flashy, but they do excellent damage, too. These forms also let you charge heavy blows to perform super attacks very much like the Ultimate Techniques in Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden games. Depending on the alignment of the guardian spirit you have equipped, you can transform into a hulking ogre armed with a chunky club, an agile demon with short blades, or a magical demon with great mid- and long-ranged attacks. In Nioh 2, this buff is applied to your character, temporarily transforming it into a powerful elemental demon with an entirely unique weapon and move set. When the gauge filled, you could perform a powerful weapon buff that enhanced your attacks for a few moments, and let you unleash unique magical attacks with your guardian spirit. In the original game, a gauge would fill as you fought enemies. More importantly, the tutorial introduces a new demon. The color distinctions make each type much easier to identify and study. Active skills are denoted with gold nodes, while passive skills are blue. Nioh featured cumbersome lists, but Nioh 2 uses a web-like grid that is much easier to navigate. The skill trees, in particular, have been radically streamlined. The UI overhaul is immediately noticeable and a very welcome change over the original's slightly clunky interface. Many advanced techniques are tied to this system, and Nioh 2 keeps Ki-Pulse alive rather than changing or removing it. By tapping the shoulder button with good timing after a combo's end, you can instantly recover a chunk of your stamina, rather than having to wait for it to recharge with time. You can practice basic attacks, finishers, and the unique Ki-Pulse ability, which is a curious stamina-recovery mechanic that is bizarrely similar in function to the active reload system in Gears of War. The alpha demo locked most of the customization options however only four preset characters per gender were playable.Īfter you create your character, Nioh 2 lets you fool around in the tutorial area, which is the same dojo from the original game. It's a small change, but one I'm certainly happy to see. Rather than placing you in his shoes again, Team Ninja lets you create your own warrior or buffoonish clown to play as throughout the game. Nioh 2 takes place several decades before William Adams arrived in Japan in the first game. The game is slated for a future PlayStation 4 release. Combined with the original game's rock-solid combat foundation, Nioh 2's new additions show tremendous promise. It featured a new weapon and demon mode transformation, unique special abilities, and radically streamlined menus. Developer Team Ninja recently tested Nioh 2's new mechanics and game balance with a closed alpha build to give fans and newcomers a chance to sample the play. The original title delivered teriffic combat set against a fantastic mythical Japanese backdrop, so more Nioh is certainly welcome. If you liked 2017's Nioh, then rejoice in knowing that Nioh 2 is more of the same well-crafted action, but with expanded gameplay elements. ![]() Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
